Dogs feel envy

http://blogs.discovery.com/news_animal/2008/12/dogs-feel-envy.html

Researchers have just proven what those of us with canine friends have suspected for a long time: Dogs feel envy. And the scientists have got photos to show this too, as you’ll soon see.

Friederike Range of the University of Vienna and colleagues conducted experiments with pairs of pet dogs and their owners. While the dogs sat next to each other with their owners behind them, an experimenter prompted one of the two to put its paw in the person’s hand. If the pup did so, it usually received a tasty piece of sausage or bread. In some cases, the person rewarded just one dog while the other dog watched. When this observant pooch then stuck out its paw, hoping for the tasty treat, it often got nada.

This is so true! Me and Sarah have definitely seen Jake and Ozzy act this way. That’s why, for the most part, we reward them at the same time. In fact, I would say always. And usually we have them calm down together too.

Panel urges Obama to consider hacker-response plan

http://news.wired.com/dynamic/stories/O/OBAMA_HACKERS

President-elect Barack Obama should create a new White House office to protect cyberspace from hackers, thieves and foreign agents, coordinating security efforts across U.S. military, intelligence and civilian agencies, according to a new report from a panel of leading government and industry experts.

I’ve been reading about the threat of hacking in cyberspace since the early days of the web in 1995. In one sense, it’s the same old story. And often in the past, the threat has been overstated. But there is a problem with complacency. While no major attacks have happened (this is debatable, of course) yet, meanwhile our networks and “webs” are becoming more and more integrated. It would take a major research project to reveal just how connected things are, what systems are still on private networks, what security exists on public networks, etc. etc. So in a sense, I agree with the panel.

However, it’s a double-edged sword. Once you have a government body tasked with cyberspace, it is sure to overreach its boundaries and original mission. But that’s why you create government watchdog groups, both internal and external. Either way it’s a big mess.

Open source to take over mainstream IT

http://news.zdnet.com/2424-9595_22-253732.html

Within the next 12 years, 40 percent of IT jobs will be related to open source, and open-source-based cloud computing will be solving many problems in the real world, open-source advocates have predicted.

The predictions were made in the 2020 Floss Roadmap, produced for the Open World Forum event in Paris this week.

This is pretty much already true in my department at the university. We have two full-time application developrs/business system analysts who are developing internal applications using PHP and MySQL. We were recently considering switching to a Microsoft-technology platform, but with our latest hire we’ve solidifed our involvement in open source. Out of the 6 IT staff in my department, that means we are at 33% already.

Finger breakdancing!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UH35Lde8nWk&feature=channel

How cool is this… I was just watching the ‘Made’ episode on MTV where Tanner gets made into a hip hop dancer. Ever since ‘Made’ came out (way after I graduated high school), I’ve always said that is what I would get made into.

Mars Phoenix’s Twitter Proves a Huge Success

http://dsc.discovery.com/news/2008/12/05/phoenix-twitter.html

If the Phoenix Lander comes back to life on Mars, Twitter users could be among the first to know.

NASA gave the historic Space Age mission an Internet Age spin by adding a Twitter page, enabling the robotic interplanetary explorer to answer the hot micro-blogging Web site’s trademark query: “What are you doing?”

I followed this feed on Twitter, it was really interesting. I guess sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. I tried following the news feed for a technology site, but it just clogged up my Twitter feed. There should probably be an option to group all posts within the last X hours from all users. So if the news site posts 12-20 twits in 24 hours, I would only see the latest, with the option of expanding them all.
